About the bursary programme

It all started when…

Martha's Farmhouse was set up to improve our community's livelihoods by providing sustainable employment. We have since set up a sports group called Lutengo Youth that offers a safe space for 12 - 18 years olds in and out of school. The mission of Lutengo Youth is to raise aspirations and increase access to education through sport.

Lutengo Youth was set up in 2017 and has grown to 100 youth, compromising 15 girls, 40 boys under 14 years and 45 boys from 14 - 18 years. Through Lutengo Youth, Martha's Farmhouse uses the power of sport and, in particular, football to provide a safe and constructive space for youth who have few opportunities. In addition, one of our objectives is to increase access to educational opportunities for youth currently out of school due to affordability.

In achieving this, we have reached out to generous friends like you who have offered to donate £500 a year to cover all the school fees and the educational materials needed.

It is quite humbling that this new programme has already caused great interest in our village and the latest child to be enrolled for a bursary walked to the farmhouse unaccompanied by her parents requesting a chance to go to school. So how are the children selected:

Selection criteria

Below are the criteria we use to select the children who access your generous donation.

  1.      Need – the inability to pay school fees has kept the child out of school.

2.      Gender – a balance between girls and boys when allocating the bursaries.

3.      School performance – a desire to go to school and encouraging grades.

4.      Membership of Lutengo Youth – actively participating in the group.

 Making your contribution

Changing the life of a child does not take much. For only £500 or $615, you can help us send a child to school for the whole year. This also covers all the school materials that they will need. We invite you to help take some of our children to school with a donation that you are happy to make. We leave the decision to you although as you can imagine the need is great. 100% of your donation goes to the child as Martha’s Farmhouse covers all the administrative costs of the programme.
